In Their Own Words
Esther was five years old, she had two black curls and big brown eyes, she was a laugher and loved to talk about every topic in the world.
She really loved going to her uncles, and most of all she loved the light-filled Shabbats with Aunt Ziona and Uncle Rahamim. Even though they had no children, she loved the warm gathering on Shabbat afternoons. All the uncles and cousins would come, crack crackers, eat and talk. Dad would sit there in front of a large watermelon, telling Aunt Ziona about the nonsense the shoppers do in his store. All the while imitating the voices of one shopper after another. Aunt Ziona would sit and roll with laughter. Mom laughed too. During the week, Mom cleaned houses, and only on these Shabbats did she allow herself to let loose.
Ziona always gave Esther special hugs and attention. She had little games under the table that were dedicated only to playing with Esther. And Rahamim always felt sorry for her if she told anyone that she had fallen in the garden or received a painful blow from the swing in the yard.
Once the sound of laughter really got louder in the house, he approached Esther. "Want to see a hidden door in the house? And just you and I can play there?" Esther was curious, what special surprise did Uncle Rahamim prepare for her this time? Maybe a game he bought just for her? Or maybe special candy? What could it be?
Rahamim carried her on his shoulders, without anyone noticing, he took her to a door in the house that had never been opened for her, there were huge beds, and spring mattresses. Just like in dreams "Wow", Esther exclaimed
"Dont you just love these beds?" Rahamim exclaimed. "You want to jump?"
"Of course." Esther replied.
She jumped and jumped just like on a trampoline and didn't notice the door has been closed and locked for the time being when Esther got tired, she lay down. Uncle Rahamim began to caress her, "Keep lying down, good girl. We'll play a game and then I'll give you a big surprise. In this game, you lie down nicely and I'll lie down on you for a bit."
Esther found it unpleasant, especially since her back was pressed against the mattress she had jumped on earlier. It even hurt. She tried to scream, but uncle Rahamim put a hand over her mouth. She wanted to go, but he didn't let her, he didn't let go. After a long time, he gave her a huge chocolate bar. He looked her in the eyes and said, "You won't tell anyone about our game, will you?" She nodded, she just wanted to get out of the big room with the huge mattresses. She went into the living room and hugged her mother, "Mom?" When are we going?" she asked. "Soon, sweetie, wow, who brought you such a huge chocolate bar?"
"Uncle Rahamim," she answered.
"I'm tired, Mom. Can we go?"
Mom looked at Dad, "Shall we go?" she asked.
"Yes," said Dad, "it really is time."
"At night, mother asked Esther, 'Esther, who did you play with today?'"
"With uncle Rahamim," she replied.
"And what did you do together?"
"We jumped on mattresses," Esther replied.
"And...and...and I can't tell you, because Uncle Rahamim told me not to tell you."
"Esther's mother took a deep breath: "There are no secrets in society, remember?! They tell everything to mom." She wiped Esther nicely, dressed her and combed her hair. "Come to bed and tell me"she said. Esther did and told everything....
H. Was sexually abused as a child
Wedding cancellation
A few months ago, The Israeli Protection Center (Muganut) received a call from a young woman who was about to get married. She reached out to us because she was facing a dilemma and was seeking help. The young woman shared that she had been sexually abused as a child and had never disclosed her story to anyone other than her parents. Shortly before her wedding, she decided to open her heart to her fiancé. He listened to her story and was shocked. He consulted his parents, and they, in turn, advised him to call off the wedding, claiming that his fiancée would never be capable of maintaining a healthy family life. As a result, the man wanted to cancel the wedding. In distress, the woman called the center to seek treatment and guidance. The situation deeply affected her. The center’s treatment team met with her several times and requested to meet her fiancé as well. Together, they underwent therapy at the center. Following the treatment, the fiancé changed his mind. He came to understand that his bride-to-be was ready to seek help in the face of any future trauma. He also realized that he would be able to communicate openly with her about anything. He then decided not to give up on her and told her he wished to proceed with the wedding as planned. And so they did. The couple got married and invited the chairperson of the organization to their wedding. In the invitation, they wrote that without the help of The Israeli Protection Center, this wedding would not have taken place at all.
